Volunteer Workstays

The Volunteer Workstay Program

Our Mission Statement:
Our mission here at the Shamans Desert Retreat is to coordinate and enable community visits by traveling shamans to isolated communities that need shamanic services. This involves insuring that the shaman and his or her assistant are supplied with lodging, meals, as well as a venue and promotion for their programs while they are in residence at a host community. As part of that mission we are accepting volunteers at the Shamans Desert Retreat in Grand Junction, Colorado to build the support structures for the shamans, retreat participants and volunteers.

About this Volunteer Opportunity:

All our projects are in support of the Traveling Shamans, their patrons and volunteers. Most of our projects require volunteers with building or landscaping skills. We ask that you work 15- hours per week in exchange for lodging and 20 hours if you want food included. Scheduling of the hours will be determined by the demands of the project. In your spare time you are free to explore the area, do your own thing, or participate in the shamanic art programs we offer here. We want to meet you all of the travelers we can. We have to limit each volunteer stay to 21-days or less unless you sign up for a longer term project once you get here and get to know the projects.

Future Projects for the Traveling Shaman's Retreat:
*️️ Tiny house for the in-residence shaman *️️ Sweat lodge with outdoor shower *️️ A rock medicine wheel *️️ A medicinal herb garden. *️️ A tepee for visitors and workstay volunteers *️️ Native Colorado desert landscaping *️️ Cannabis grow room & greenhouse.

About Mike & Julia:

Julia is the events and volunteer coordinator for the Traveling Shamans. Mike is a geologist who is very knowledgeable and skilled at building, but still holds down a full-time job, so can't get to all the pending building projects and often must work weekends on them. We are also super hosts for a 420 friendly vacation rental in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The soon-to-be shamanic retreat where we live is located in a small hillside desert area of modular homes overlooking the wine grape growing areas here in western Colorado. We have a cat. Mike smokes cigarettes sporadically -- always outside. Julia is an artist & painter. We are plant medicine and LBGT friendly. We are the core patrons of the Traveling Shamans and a married couple who have been together off and on since 1990. We are working to create a core community of old hippies from which shamans can use to connect with communities that need them. Currently we need volunteers who like landscaping and building things.

Please contact me with any questions. Warmly, Julia 970-200-LOVE.

Some of our Workstay Volunteers

Volunteers will be housed either in a 29 foot camp trailer, a tipi, or other available lodging. We have a lounge area in the loft in the shop. Although wifi, a TV with Netflix and and an Xbox are available in the loft, It is somewhat primitive -- heated by a wood burning stove. Currently volunteers will use the main house bathroom and shower until other facilities are built. If you choose the meals option - meals  are coffee, cereal and/or toaster waffles for breakfast, sandwich fixings are supplied for lunch and dinner is usually a one-pot crock pot meal. Unless you like to cook then we can get more creative.

We have an additional space (installing a sewer hook-up could be first project) for volunteers with their own camper or motor home. We are about 4 miles from the town of Grand Junction and two miles from a city bus stop.

What else ...

Skiing, mountain biking areas, and the fabulous red rock areas of Utah are close by. We have bikes to loan and Uber is available. When inquiring, please comment on your interest in a particular project and your experience as it relates to that project. Also please confirm that you are 420 friendly. In addition, we are asking that you confirm that you understand that this gig is only 21 days long (or less if you want a shorter stay - more if you get involved in a project that requires your skills and we ask you to stay.)
Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

This exchange offers the opportunity to learn more about shamanism and spend time with shamans. Julia offers the following programs in the afternoons: Painting as Meditation 2 hours 2-days per week. Creation of Spirit Guide Collage Cards & The Sacred Canyon Walk. You can also learn more about micro-dosing with plant medicine for use with meditation and spiritual growth.
